STUDY ON DAMAGE MECHANISM OF PROJECTILE ENGRAVING INTO DIFFERENT RIFLED BARREL PROCESSES

A physical calculation model of rifled barrels with diverse section forms was constructed to investigate the damage mechanisms of projectiles engraved into various rifled barrels. In addition to simulating the dynamic process of projectiles engraving into rifled barrels using the finite element approach, the engagement force and radial strain of various rifled barrels were compared experimentally. Both the dynamic reaction of the projectile engagement force and the damage cloud map of the projectile are provided. According to the computational results, the barrel with a circular rifled shape had the lowest engagement force and least equivalent plastic strain-based damage, which makes it appropriate for use in engineering applications. These computed results agree well with the experimental results.
