Predictors of Subjective Well-Being in Young Men and Women of Transnistria: a Gender Aspect

The present study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of gender characteristics of subjective well-being of the youth of Transnistria in the context of the unique socio-political conditions of the region. The aim of the work was to identify and assess the differences in the psychological determinants of subjective well-being among young men and women living in this region, taking into account the specifics of their social environment and cultural traditions. The main hypothesis of the study is the assumption of the presence of statistically significant gender differences in the structure and components of subjective well-being, which may be due to differences in social roles and expectations imposed on representatives of different sexes in society. The empirical base of the study was a sample of 329 students of the Pridnestrovian State University ( n 1 = 153 girls, n 2 = 176 boys) aged 17 to 23 years. The methodological tools included a set of modern psychodiagnostic techniques aimed at an in-depth study of the structure of temperament, the level of perceived social support, the degree of dispositional hope, the severity of personality traits, viability and indicators of subjective well-being. The results of the statistical analysis revealed significant gender differences in a number of indicators and also identified predictors of subjective well-being in groups of men and women. In particular, it was found that girls demonstrate higher values on the emotionality and social emotionality scales, which may indicate a greater tendency to emotional response and social interaction. Young men, on the contrary, showed higher values on the neuroticism scale, which indicates specific psychological characteristics that require further study and attention from specialists. Regression analysis showed that for girls, the key predictors of subjective well-being are social emotionality, extroversion and positive attitudes, while for young men, significant determinants are social competence, social ergicity and support from friends.
