The features of the compositional-speech organization of the Bible text (based on the English-language book “The Acts of the Apostles”)

The aim of the research is to reveal the features of the compositional-speech structure of the English-language Bible text in the aspect of speech interference, which is interpreted as joining the narrator’s speech and the character’s speech. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that the concept of speech interference is for the first time applied in relation to the Bible text, which is considered as a constituent type of narrative discourse. The text analyzed is defined as a historical narrative that reproduces the plot sequence from the narrator’s point of view. The main characteristic of narrative speech is its diegetic nature, in the aspect of which the narrator acts either as an observer or as a participant in plot events. In its turn, depicting the characters’ speech activity is associated with mimetic techniques of its representation. The obtained results demonstrate that the biblical text under investigation combines in a balanced way the mental speech techniques of diegesis (when rendering the narrator’s speech) and mimesis (when depicting the characters’ speeches). The interference of the characters’ and narrator’s speeches is realized in various ways: direct speech, indirect speech, and free indirect speech. The use of different ways of representing speech activity is a distinctive feature of the compositional-speech organization of the book “The Acts of the Apostles”.
