Nonlinear Information Metasurface for Second-Harmonic Generation, Manipulation, and Backscatter Communication
In the microwave spectrum, the emergence of metamaterials has paved a pathway for the direct conversion of spatial waves into frequency-multiplication harmonics. However, despite the attractive physical discoveries, the practical application of these harmonics has not been well explored. Here, we propose a nonlinear information metasurface (IMS) for harmonic generation and demonstrate its application in harmonic backscatter communication (BackCom). The IMS consists of an array of passive meta-atoms controlled by a digital module, which can multiply the frequency of the incident wave and dynamically tailor the phase of the generated second harmonic (SH). A prototype is fabricated, and its relatively high frequency-conversion efficiency and real-time controllable SH scattering performances are validated experimentally. In the BackCom system, the key roles of the IMS in harmonic beam-steering and digital information modulation are demonstrated, showcasing binary and quadrature phase shift keying modulation schemes directly on the SH carrier wave. Given that the backscattered and incident signals operate on separate frequency channels, the nonlinear IMS presents a promising solution for BackCom with enhanced performances and reduced interference, particularly in the context of an increasingly congested spectrum today.
