From the Ocean to the Classroom: The Journey of Blue Education and Its Challenges
This study investigates the significance of Ocean Literacy and its role within education. Ocean Literacy, defined as the comprehension of the interconnectedness between the ocean and human life, as well as the ramifications of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment, constitutes a fundamental instrument for the protection of marine ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable development. The research focuses on Greece, a nation with a rich maritime heritage, and examines the challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of Ocean Literacy into educational curricula. Concerns are highlighted regarding environmental pollution and the absence of a systematic approach to Ocean Literacy within the National Curriculum, alongside inconsistencies in the coverage of relevant topics in school textbooks. This study underscores the importance of collaboration among educators, researchers, and policymakers in the development of a national action plan that will effectively incorporate Ocean Literacy into educational programs. Furthermore, international initiatives, such as the eTwinning program and the Pandoteira Programme in Cyprus, are presented as potential models for Greece. The study concludes that the integration of Ocean Literacy into education is not only imperative for environmental preservation but also for the cultivation of an environmentally conscious and responsible future generation.
