Design of symmetric cell configuration using γ-Mo4O11 nanorods with ultra-high power density and excellent stability
The present study emphasizes the design of high caliber Faradic electrode (molybdenum oxide) via one step hydrothermal method in presence of anionic surfactant as structure directing agent. Structural, morphological, textural and electrochemical investigations are made on the prepared γ-Mo 4 O 11 nanostructured electrodes to demonstrate its potential in supercapacitor domain. In three electrode cell, the fabricated mesoporous interlinked γ-Mo 4 O 11 electrodes exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 172 F g −1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s −1 . It was achieved by the facile architecture of molybdenum oxide which provides ultra-fast ion kinetics of electrolyte ions during electrochemical activity. Cyclic stability of 88.79 % (capacitance retention) is attained for γ-Mo 4 O 11 nanorods over continuous 10000 charge/discharge cycles. Presence of porous morphology accelerates ion storage mechanism which it is evidenced by its superior rate performance as 171 F g −1 at current density of 1 A g −1 . A special symmetric supercapacitor cell is designed based on sandwich model. The symmetric supercapacitor (γ-Mo 4 O 11 //6 M H 2 SO 4 //γ-Mo 4 O 11 ) fabricated in the current study is capable of providing an energy density of 8 W h kg −1 with a power density of 897 W kg −1 . Attractively, 88.23 % of capacitance is retained even after 10000 continuous charge/discharge cycles. The findings of the current study underline the potential use of γ-Mo 4 O 11 electrodes for supercapacitor applications. Mesoporous inter-linked γ-Mo 4 O 11 nanosheets provide excellent electrochemical performance due to facile morphology. • Mesoporous γ-Mo 4 O 11 nanorods are synthesized via one step hydrothermal technique. • γ-Mo 4 O 11 electrode possesses 88.79 % capacitance retention over 10000 cycles. • The designed full cell provided a maximum power density of 897 W kg −1 .
