New record of Murina huttonii (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from Yunnan, China, with description of a new subspecies

The Hutton’s tube-nosed bat ( Murina huttonii ) predominantly resides in regions extending from India eastward to South China and the Indochina Peninsula. However, its subspecific geographical differentiation remains sparsely reported. This research investigated the subspecific geographical differentiation of M. huttonii in China, utilizing a collection of 23 specimens from five provinces in southern China, including Yunnan in the southwest, based on comparative analysis of pelage characteristics and statistical evaluation. Results indicated that the specimen from Yunnan not only constitutes a new record for M. huttonii in Yunnan Province but also represents a distinct subspecies, different from existing subspecies of M. huttonii . Furthermore, incorporating findings from current literature, the new subspecies was compared with M. huttonii samples from Thailand and Vietnam.
