Human-Centered Gait Balance Estimation Using Footstep-Induced Floor Vibrations
Gait balance is a critical indicator of neurological and neuromuscular conditions, such as stroke and Parkinson's disease. Estimating multiple balance features (e.g., the left/right pressure balance in the forefoot, rearfoot, and entire foot) often provides clinicians with insights that facilitate more strategic and personalized treatment plans. Existing approaches that primarily rely on pressure mats, wearable devices, camera-based systems, or direct clinical observation often impose constraints on user experience, such as discomfort, the need for active participation, and potential privacy issues. In contrast, recent advances have demonstrated that floor vibrations captured by geophone sensors can effectively reflect gait dynamics.
