Shaping the Future: Strategies for Cultivating Values Among Secondary School Students

This study examines the integration of value education within India’s democratic context through a content analysis of the NCERT 9th-grade Civics curriculum. The qualitative investigation identifies embedded value propositions and analyses five evidence-based instructional strategies: role-based simulations, narrative pedagogy, structured argumentation, gamification, and case-based learning. These approaches are examined through Piaget’s cognitive constructivism, Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, and Kolb’s experiential learning framework to elucidate mechanisms of ethical development. Findings demonstrate that constructivist and experiential paradigms enhance the internalisation of values through active engagement, social meaning-making, and contextual application. The research contributes a theoretically grounded framework for value education that aligns with India’s NEP 2020 imperatives for inquiry-based learning, advancing the broader objective of cultivating ethically informed citizenship essential for a democratic society’s sustainability.
