World University Rankings (WUR) are significant in the higher education ecosystem. Literature highlights several critiques and methodological differences adopted by renowned rankings such as the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR), Quacquarelli Symonds (QS WUR), and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This paper identifies consistently high-ranked universities worldwide from 2014 to 2023, including Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). An assessment and comparison of the performance of these three institutions across various ranking indicators such as teaching, research, and international outreach are conducted. Findings indicate that Stanford University ranked highest in THE WUR, MIT in QS WUR, and Harvard University in ARWU during the study period. The performance of different universities varied for similar criteria across the various rankings. Harvard University emerged as the best and most consistently ranked institution across all rankings for the decade. The analysis presented in the paper offers directions for improvement in performance for universities worldwide that aim to enhance the quality of teaching and research. Additionally, it provides policy imperatives and suggestions for stakeholders involved in improving the utility of the ranking system.
