Biodegradable flax fiber-based nonwovens for oil spill mitigation and environmental protection
An effort was undertaken in this study to create needle-punched microfiber constructed of flax and polyethylene (80/20) for the cleaning of oil spills. The challenges of using a needle punch procedure to structure flax fibre and create linen are covered. Consequently, a nonwoven made of hydrophobic-oleophilic flax fibre has been created, and the oil adsorption and retention properties have been studied. In comparison to the commercialised polypropylene-based oil sorbent pad, the greatest amount of oil adsorption for high-density oil and diesel motor oil was determined to be 20.36 g/g and 31.20 g/g, respectively. Its persistence and worth, which vary from 0.92 to 0.98 and offer it a replacement for artificially absorbing substances, were intriguing findings. Only a small quantity of ash residue remained after the oil-sorbed sample combustion examination, indicating its applicability and environmentally favourable characteristics.
