Working with Pain 3: Cultural Considerations

Pain management in maternity care is not experienced equitably. This article explores the cultural biases and systemic inequalities affecting Black and Asian women’s pain relief during childbirth. Midwives have a duty to challenge these biases, advocate for equitable care and provide culturally-appropriate support. Addressing these disparities is both a professional and legal obligation, ensuring all women receive compassionate, individualised maternity care. Change starts with midwives – by listening, advocating and taking action.
