Synthesis, Characterization And Study Of Catalysis And Antimicrobial Properties Of Metal Chelates Derived With Novel Schiff Base Ligand

Metal Chelates of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) with novel  Schiff  base ligand, 4-EPH derived from p-phenylenediamine, 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 4-ethoxybenzaldehyde.  The structural features of   Schiff base ligand and its metal chelates were characterized using various analytical techniques including elemental analysis, UV-Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mass spectrometry, molar conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The results confirmed that the ligand coordinated with the metal ions in a bi-dentate manner through azomethine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen atom, leading to the formation of octahedral geometries. Molar conductance studies indicated the non-electrolytic nature of all the metal complexes. Additionally, the catalytic properties of the Co-4-EPH, Ni-4-EPH, and Cu-4-EPH chelates were investigated using standard chemical reactions. The antimicrobial activity of the Schiff base ligand and its metal chelates was evaluated using the disk diffusion method.
