Influence of seed physiological rupture on the physiological quality and storage of soybean seeds

Seeds are the foundation for successful agricultural production and using high-quality seeds is crucial for achieving high yields. However, various factors can affect seed physiological quality, one of which is seed coat rupture. This defect has been increasingly observed in recent years and negatively impacts seed quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds from three soybean cultivars with varying levels of seed physiological rupture, produced in two different seed production environments and stored for different periods, to assess the impact of rupture. Scanning electron microscopy revealed type I rupture in all cultivars analysed. The results indicated that seeds with physiological seed rupture associated with moisture damage had reduced initial quality. The ‘BMX Lança IPRO’ cultivar experienced a more significant decline in physiological quality, suggesting a genetic effect. The storage of seeds with ruptured seed coats is compromised, resulting in a shorter lifespan compared to intact seeds. Furthermore, rupture rates exceeding 75% render seed storage and commercialisation infeasible.
