Simultaneous multi-order vibration suppression by centrifugal double pendulum vibration absorber with experimental validation

• Centrifugal Double Pendulum Vibration Absorber (CDPVA) is modeled and explained. • Derivation of tuning equations for CDPVA to suppress two resonances. • The influence of CDPVA's nonlinearity is clarified at different excitation amplitudes. • Clarify the contrast in damping effects between pendulum-pendulum and rotor-pendulum. • CDPVA's effectiveness on double resonances is validated experimentally. The centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) is commonly used to suppress torsional vibrations in automotive shaft systems. The centrifugal double pendulum vibration absorber (CDPVA)—a specialized type of CPVA—consists of two pendulums mounted in series on a rotor. In contrast to the CPVA, the CDPVA can simultaneously suppress torsional vibrations of two orders without the need to shorten the pendulum to address higher-order vibrations. This study clarified the vibration suppression mechanism of the CDPVA using the natural frequency diagram. Its effectiveness in simultaneously suppressing vibration with two orders was verified experimentally. Additionally, the nonlinear effects of the CDPVA were investigated through experimental observations. In detail, a numerical model was developed using a multibody dynamics approach, and nonlinear analysis was performed using the shooting method. Using the tuning equation, two sets of pendulums were tuned to specific vibration orders using their moments of inertia. Because the pendulums in each set have different inertia ratios, each set has a different capacity for suppressing vibrations at different orders. Further analysis was conducted to illustrate changes in the system’s natural frequency diagram and to clarify the effects of excitation amplitude and pendulum damping on system stability. Finally, experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the CDPVA.
