Simulation-assisted Design and Implementation of an Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor Drive System
The electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM), also called the wound field synchronous motor, does not use permanent magnets and provides advantages such as a wide constant power range, high efficiency, and easy control at high speeds. Moreover, the rotor coil is used to instead of rotor magnet and generate the required rotor magnetic field through current control. This article presents the preliminary design of an EESM rated at 3.4 kW/3000 rpm using dual finite element analysis tools, ANSYS Motor-CAD and Maxwell 2D. Wherein the rotor current is generated by a full-bridge circuit and the current is through carbon brushes and slip rings to rotor coil. Finally, a digital signal processor-based motor drive is constructed to verify design results of the EESM. The efficiency is 90.9% at rated point (@3.4kW/3000 rpm). Moreover, the errors in electrical parameters and generated torque between simulated and experimental results are less than 10%.
