A Multi Mode Control Algorithm for Totem-pole Bridgeless PFC
This paper presented a multi-mode control algorithm for totem pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC): the PFC operates at continuous conduction mode (CCM) at heavy load or at AC peak, and triangular current mode (TCM) with zero voltage switching (ZVS) at light load or around AC zero-crossing. A processed zero current detection (ZCD) signal is used to determine the transition between CCM and TCM, a traditional average current mode controller generates pulse width modulation (PWM) duty cycle for both CCM and TCM, resulting in a smooth transition between each mode. The amount of inductor negative current, the deadtime between synchronous switch turns off and boost switch turns on, and the loop compensator parameters are dynamically adjusted to optimize efficiency and performance across the entire operation range. This multi-mode operation combines the advantages of both CCM and TCM operations, resulting in a high efficiency, high power density and low-cost totem pole bridgeless PFC solution.
