A Concept for Current Ripple or Transient Improvements in Multiphase Converters
Separate coupled inductors can be linked together with secondary windings to improve performance, similar to a previous concept of the trans-inductor voltage regulator. The secondary windings have an AC current, in sync with the ripple in the main power phases. The paper proposes to simplify the estimate of the current ripple in the arbitrary connection of several coupled inductors. It is also proposed to appropriately route the already existing secondary current for the ripple cancellation at the converter output. Alternatively, the secondary AC can be used to multiply the transient current step and therefore improve the transient performance of a voltage regulator. The experimental results confirm the operation of the proposed concepts.
