Lumped Parameter Modeling for Real-Time Thermal Regulation of Li-Ion Battery Packs
Overheating in lithium-ion battery packs can significantly reduce their performance and lifespan. To address this issue, we have developed a lumped parameter thermal model that accurately represents the thermal behavior of these battery packs. This model includes the effects of fluid flow and the channel width between parallel cells, aspects often overlooked in traditional models. By integrating our model with an internal combustion engine cooling method, we form a comprehensive thermal regulation system. We implement this system in real-time using OPAL-RT to evaluate its performance under various operational scenarios. Our results highlight the importance of considering channel width in thermal modeling to enhance accuracy. The real-time implementation demonstrates the practicality of our approach for grid-connected battery energy storage systems. This work advances battery thermal management by providing a model suitable for real-time applications. It offers insights for designing efficient cooling processes and preventing overheating. Our study contributes to improving the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion battery packs.
