The Integration of the Focus Particle ‘ppwun’ Construction and ‘man’ Construction
This study aims to identify the motivation behind the integration of the focus particle ‘ppwun’ construction and ‘man’ construction. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the focus of the focus particle constructions can be categorized based on meaning into narrow focus and broad focus, and based on form into short focus and long focus. Second, this study found that the origin of the ‘ppwun-man(to/un)’ sequence lies in the ‘man’ construction rather than the ‘ppwun’ construction. The ‘ppwun-man’ has the characteristic of only being followed by the predicate ‘ani-’, but ‘ani-’ in this case does not negate the preceding element of the ‘ppwun-man’; rather, it negates the exclusion expressed by the ‘ppwun-man’. Since the ‘ppwun ani-’ only conveys the meaning of negation of exclusion, it does not require the intervention of the ‘man’. However, the ‘man ani-’ can simultaneously express both the negation of the preceding element and the negation of exclusion, leading to ambiguity. To resolve this ambiguity of the ‘man ani-’, strategies such as placing ‘ppwun’ before ‘man’ or adding particles like ‘i, to, un’ after ‘man’ are employed.
