President's Page: The transformative role of large language models in geophysics education
In recent years, the rise of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced the field of geophysics, evidenced by the rapidly growing number of journal articles and technical sessions at IMAGE conferences. Yet, beyond enhancing operational efficiency and achieving better technical results, the profound impact of AI, particularly large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Gemini, lies in its potential to fundamentally transform how we educate and how students learn. This shift holds both opportunities and challenges for the future of geophysics education and professional development.
