The Effect of Magnetic Abrasive Finishing on the Quality of the Surface Layer of Parts

The article examines the influence of the parameters of Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) on the quality of the surface layer of the part, measured by roughness and microhardness. The article presents theoretical provisions on the effect of micro-impacts and micro-cutting during MAF on the structure of the surface layer. The morphology and the topography of the surface of samples made of two types of steel and a hard alloy have been studied before and after magnetic abrasive processing. A technique for preparing samples for durometric studies has been developed. The methodology has been provided for the use of methods that ensure minimal impact on the part material during sample preparation. As a result of the experiments, it has been found out that the microhardness at the depth of the surface of the part after processing have increased to 0.2 mm compared with the initial value. It has been also found out that after magnetic abrasive treatment, the microhardness of the cutting tool increases by up to 30%. The experiments conducted to study the effect of the technological parameters of the MAF on the quality of the surface layer of parts are a prerequisite for studying the hardening of the surface layer of the machined parts. Thus, the results of the studies may in the future make it possible to conduct experiments to study such properties of the surface layer as wear resistance. Research is possible in the field of increasing the hardening of parts, both during manufacturing and during restoration. It is also expected that these results will be used to increase the wear resistance of mating surfaces of parts operating under heavily loaded conditions.
