A Complex Case of Multiple Trauma-Induced Intramuscular Scapular Abscess
Abstract Intramuscular scapular abscesses are rare and challenging to diagnose due to their deep location and ability to mimic common shoulder pathologies. This case report presents a 55-year-old female who developed an intramuscular scapular abscess following multiple traumatic events, including a closed reduction of a dislocated shoulder. Despite initial conservative treatment and steroid injection, she developed pain, swelling and pus formation. Diagnostic ultrasound and microbiological analysis identified methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus . Surgical drainage targeted antibiotics and led to significant recovery with some residual stiffness. This case highlights the importance of considering scapular abscesses in patients with shoulder pain and trauma, emphasising a multidisciplinary approach for optimal recovery.
