Friction and wear properties of <scp>3D</scp> braided carbon fiber/epoxy composites with artistic braiding morphology

Abstract The three‐dimensional (3D) braided composites own superb mechanical properties overall, which can better resist the complex friction extrusion behaviors generated by the combination of environmental and force loads during service. In this study, 3D braided carbon fiber/epoxy composites with braiding angles (14°, 18°, 28°, and 38°) are prepared. The influence mechanism of braiding angle on the transverse and longitudinal friction and wear of composites was revealed from the aspects of the microstructure of the composite cross section, the morphology of the wear surface, and the change process of friction damage. The results show that with the increase of the braiding angle, the transverse and longitudinal friction coefficients of the composites decrease by 33.79% and 23.68%, and the wear rate decreases by 75.08% and 73.55%, respectively. Because the arrangement of carbon fibers in the resin matrix becomes more compact and orderly in the transverse section, which is conducive to reducing friction damage and improving the quality of the transfer film. This study is valuable for the design and application of carbon fiber epoxy friction materials with high mechanical properties and high wear resistance under complex working conditions. Highlights The relationship between surface microstructure and friction performance is explored. Large braiding angle composites exhibited lower friction coefficients and wear rates. The friction process of 3D braided composites was investigated.
