The Synergistic Effect of Amino Acids and Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) on CO₂ Gas Hydrate Based Desalination

This study investigates the impact of varying operational pressures and the mixture of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) and L-Phenylalanine as hydrate promoters in gas hydrate-based desalination. Experiments were conducted at pressures ranging from 20 to 40 bar, with different concentrations of SDS and L-Phenylalanine to evaluate their effects on hydrate formation, water recovery, and impurity levels. Results indicate that increasing the concentration of SDS and L-Phenylalanine significantly enhances water recovery and gas hydrate formation efficiency, particularly at 10g-20bar sample achieved the highest water recovery of 30%, while the 5g-20bar sample exhibited the lowest at 10%, highlighting the crucial role of promoter concentration in optimizing hydrate-based desalination. However, a higher concentration of promoters also led to increased impurity levels in the recovered water, as indicated by refractive index measurements. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing hydrate-based desalination systems for sustainable water purification and CO₂ utilization.
