CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES FOR MASTERING THE ARABIC LANGUAGE IN THE ISLAMIC STUDIES DIPLOMA PROGRAM: A STUDY AT UniSHAMS
In the era of globalization and advancements in educational technology, proficiency in the Arabic language among university students, particularly those in Islamic studies, is of paramount importance. However, many students continue to struggle with speaking, comprehending texts, and applying Arabic in academic and daily communication contexts. Despite being taught at the university level, students’ proficiency remains moderate. Consequently, this study was conducted to identify the challenges in mastering Arabic and analyze effective strategies to enhance Arabic proficiency among Diploma in Islamic Studies students at UniSHAMS. This study employs a qualitative approach through a case study at UniSHAMS. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with Diploma in Islamic Studies students and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal key challenges in Arabic language acquisition, including difficulties with grammar and vocabulary, ineffective traditional teaching methods, and a lack of speaking practice. Meanwhile, effective strategies include interactive teaching approaches, the integration of digital technology in learning, and support through Islamic studies subjects that incorporate reading exercises from tafsir, hadith, and fiqh texts. As an implication, this study highlights the need for universities and lecturers to adopt more innovative and interactive teaching methods to enhance Arabic proficiency, as well as integrate practical training to strengthen students’ communication skills. The findings are expected to serve as a foundation for developing more effective teaching policies and strategies to improve Arabic language proficiency at Islamic universities such as UniSHAMS.
