A Study on the ‘Basic’ Lesson Plan for the Level 5 Course of the Korea Immigration & Integration Program Utilizing the Film ‘Ode to My Father’

The Ministry of Justice of Korea operates the Korea Immigration & Integration Program (KIIP) to aid immigrants entering Korea and settling down.Among the program, the level 5 course 'Understanding Korean Society' covers various topics on Korean 'society, education, culture, politics, economy, law, history, and geography'.However, it is quite a challenge for foreign learners to systematically understand a large amount of learning content in which 50 units must be completed within 60 hours. Therefore, this study aims to help foreign learners effectively remember and internalize the learning content by understanding and empathizing with Korean conceptual culture and major events in contemporary history mentioned in textbooks through the characters of the film 'Ode to My Father'.To achieve this goal, this study organized the connection between the contents of the Level 5 Course Textbook and the film 'Ode to My Father'.It aimed to find the meaning of the course using the film through the opinions of the master's students in the graduate school of education who learned about the teaching method of this course. As a result, it was confirmed that using the movie 'Ode to My Father' is not only a meaningful teaching material that can help understand Korean conceptual culture and contemporary history in courses on understanding Korean society but also helpful in preparing for evaluations. This study will also be helpful to field instructors who face difficulties in providing clear verbal explanations to the students in the level 5 courses. However, the limitation of this study is that it has not been tested in the field, nor has the opinions of actual learners been collected.
