Value conditionality as a new EU mechanism used against autocratizing Hungary
Hungary's violations of the European rule of law principles in recent years have shown that the corresponding EU protection mechanisms are not effective and have no lasting impact. In order to maintain the vision of Europe as a community of values, however, it is imperative to enforce the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights in the EU. Against this backdrop, the author analyses new forms of value conditionality in order to be able to cut foundings if a Member State does not comply with certain basic institutional requirements.
