A Study on the Technical Development Trends and Applicable to Fishing Vessel of High-Temperature Superconducting Motor for Ship Propulsion System

As the need for the development of core technologies for eco-friendly ships has increased due to the strengthening of environmental regulations by the International Maritime Organization and countries around the world, a paradigm shift in the global ship market is being promoted, and the ecofriendly ship market is expanding.Among the devices applied to eco-friendly ships, high-temperature superconducting motors with characteristics such as high efficiency, lightweight, low vibration, low noise, and safety are attracting attention as generators and propulsion devices that can replace internal combustion engines. In this study, it was confirmed that MgB2 can be used to produce superconducting wires with lower AC loss and lower cost than conventional REBCO in the field of superconducting wires. In addition, high-temperature superconducting motors are being studied and demonstrated for use in automobiles, aircraft, and generators. However, it has been confirmed that they have only been used in naval warships in the United States and have not yet been used for the propulsion of merchant ships or fishing boats.Accordingly, we analyzed the reasons why it is difficult to apply high-temperature superconducting motors, which are expected to be used for the propulsion of eco-friendly ships, to drive the propulsion engines of fishing vessels and proposed a method to solve this problem.
