Moisturizing Effective Mechanism and Formation of Low Viscous Emulsion Using Sugar Crystal-LC Emulsifier

This study aims to develop liquid crystal emulsions and create a dermatological model to strengthen the skin barrier at the junction connecting the dermis and epidermal layer. The results of the study are reported as follows.Liquid crystal emulsions that were stable even at low viscosity were developed using vegetable surfactants.By applying this to the skin, the effect on the skin and the new mechanism of action were analyzed to improve healthy skin by conducting a moisturizing evaluation. The liquid crystal-forming emulsifier of Sugar Crystal-LC developed a stable liquid crystal emulsifier even when stored for a long time and found a difference from a general emulsion. The particle size distribution and structure of the liquid crystal emulsion were observed with a polarization microscope, and it was proved that the multilayer lamellar structure was formed using Cryo-TEM.It was found that the stability of the liquid crystal emulsion had little variation in the particle size and maintained the liquid crystal particle size even in the region of acidity and high alkalinity with a low pH range. To produce a stable liquid crystal, the particles of the liquid crystal tended to increase in a composition containing 5 wt% or more of NaCl and 3 wt% or more of CaCl2 due to the effect of salt.In an experiment on whether the concentration of ethanol affects liquid crystal formation as the concentration of ethanol increases, the prescription containing 15 wt% ethanol was stable at 7.02 m.The emulsion particle diameter increased when the concentration was 20 to 30 wt%.Still, the shape of the liquid crystal formation remained the same.As a result of measuring the moisturizing effect (in-vivo) using a general emulsion and a liquid crystal emulsion, the liquid crystal emulsion improved by 9.85% after 2 weeks and 13.13% after 4 weeks. The skin elasticity (in-vivo) effect was improved by 5.28% after 2 weeks and 10.31% after 4 weeks. This increased moisturization and elasticity because the bound water enclosed in the multiple micelles of the liquid crystal emulsion was absorbed and involved in the junction connecting the epidermis and dermis, strengthening the skin barrier.Through this study, it is expected that the mechanism by which liquid crystal emulsion strengthens the skin barrier will be interpreted in cosmetic science to prove the principle of healthy skin and be widely applied to related industries.
