Microgrid scheduling strategy based on aggregated thermostatically controlled loads

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources within the grid requires advanced microgrid scheduling to optimize operation costs. The demand-side response has emerged as a vital component in modern energy systems, enabling consumers to adjust their electricity usage in response to supply conditions and economic signals. Accordingly, a novel microgrid scheduling strategy incorporates demand side response focusing on thermostatically controlled loads, called virtual batteries. The aggregated thermostatically controlled loads expand the adjustable power range, which helps to enhance flexibility in an energy management system, save cost, and improve grid stability. Future trends indicate a growing reliance on such integrated approaches as energy markets evolve toward dynamic pricing and decentralized generation. Case studies show that the proposed strategy can significantly reduce the cost of electricity purchase and enhance microgrid flexibility.
