The Socio-Economic Impact of the Digital India Program in Rural India: A Case Study from Matigara Block of Darjeeling District, West Bengal
The Digital India program, launched in 2015, aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society by providing universal access to digital services, infrastructure, and literacy. This study examines the socioeconomic impact of the Digital India program on rural communities in the Matigara Block of Darjeeling District, West Bengal. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques, to analyze the adoption and usage of digital services, digital literacy levels, and the challenges faced by rural populations. The findings reveal that while there is increasing access to digital technology, as evidenced by high smartphone ownership (83%), a notable digital divide persists, with 17% of families still lacking access. Furthermore, awareness of key digital initiatives such as the National Health Digital Mission (8%) and E-Pathshala (36%) remains low, and even when awareness exists, adoption is inconsistent. Statistical analysis confirms that smartphone ownership is significantly associated with awareness of digital government services, and socioeconomic factors such as income influence the adoption of digital financial technologies. The study concludes that for the Digital India program to truly transform rural India, a multifaceted approach is needed, focusing not only on expanding digital infrastructure but also prioritizing digital literacy programs, awareness campaigns, and addressing the socioeconomic factors that influence digital adoption.
