A Universal Control Methodology for Modular DC-DC Converters Utilizing System Eigenvectors

The advantages of modular power-electronic converters are particularly evident for galvanically isolated dc-dc converters, which can be flexibly interconnected in series or parallel to increase the voltage or current rating, respectively. However, such systems always present great challenges in controlling the overall power transfer and the power sharing between the individual units while guaranteeing stability. Various solutions from the literature are always limited to specific interconnection variants, topology sub-classes or modulation schemes. This article proposes and experimentally validates a universal approach to the control of modular dc-dc converters, which is independent of the chosen topology and its operating principle, covers every possible interconnection variant, allows to control every variable individually without any cross couplings, and is easy to implement, while being as physically insightful as possible. It promotes a more widespread and flexible use and an improved scalability of modular power electronics in general.
