Internet of Things in Corporate Social Responsibility: A Tool to Attain Environmental and Social Sustainability
CSR can be said as a scheme through which a corporate obeys its social obligations and also obeying these obligations leads to achieve SDGs formulated by United Nations. CSR is being practiced for decades but in era of Industry 4.0, the businesses have taken a step further and included technology such as IoT and AI in formulation, implementation and reporting of CSR scheme. The present study takes into consideration the integration of IoT technology in environmental and social CSR and studies its impact. The study found that integration of IoT technology in CSR scheme had two-way impact, on one side it promotes both environmental and social sustainability by detecting and mitigating pollution, by enabling effective waste discharge and by providing better and safe working conditions, mitigation of accidents, respectively but on the other side the integration of technology has also created employment and privacy issues. The study limits its scope till study of IoT technology into two aspects of CSR i.e., environmental and social. The further studies can be conducted on effect of integration of technologies such as AI and Big Data on the CSR schemes and other aspect of environmental and social sustainability can be studied.
