HISTÓRIA DO CONCRETO NO BRASIL E NO MUNDO
This paper presents the historical evolution of reinforced concrete, from its primitive forms to the essential material we know today. Initially used in Ancient Rome as pozzolanic lime, concrete underwent significant advancements, such as the creation of hydraulic cement by John Smeaton in 1756 and the invention of Portland cement by Joseph Aspdin in 1824. In the 19th century, systematic tests improved its strength, and in 1849, Joseph Monier developed reinforced concrete, combining steel and concrete for greater structural durability. In the 20th century, new technologies such as ready-mix concrete and chemical additives boosted its application. In Brazil, concrete is widely used in infrastructure and iconic constructions, such as the Itaipu Dam and the Administrative City of Minas Gerais. With continuous advancements, concrete is expected to remain a fundamental pillar of urban development and civil engineering. It is concluded that, with on going research and the development of new technologies, reinforced concrete will continue to play an essential role in the progress of global infrastructure, enabling safer, more efficient, and sustainable buildings.
