Recognition and Management of Tinea Nigra in Children: A Case Series

Tinea nigra (TN) is a rare superficial phaeohyphomycosis, predominantly caused by Hortaea werneckii, often misdiagnosed due to its resemblance to melanocytic lesions. We report a series of four pediatric cases presenting with slowly enlarging unilateral palmar hyperpigmented macules, confirmed in one patient through direct mycological examination and culture. All cases were successfully treated with topical azole antifungals, achieving complete resolution within 4 weeks. This report highlights the importance of clinical suspicion, dermoscopic evaluation, and direct microscopy for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of TN.
