Enhancing Awareness and Prevention of Doping in Sports: A Holistic Perspective

Doping in competitive sports, defined as the use of prohibited substances to enhance athletic performance, remains a pressing challenge for the global sports community. Despite stringent regulations by international sports organizations, athletes often unintentionally consume banned substances through medications or supplements, leading to positive doping tests and disqualifications. This study underscores the urgent need for educating young athletes on prohibited substances and Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs). We propose leveraging advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to accurately detect banned substances in food and medicines, thereby reducing accidental doping violations. The system has been evaluated using the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) dataset covering anti doping testing across 40 sports and 69 countries ensuring a comprehensive and diverse database for substance detection While direct implementation with athletes is in progress initial testing with publicly available medication labels has demonstrated promising accuracy in detecting prohibited substances. By streamlining the TUE application process, athletes with genuine medical needs can access essential medications without violating anti-doping rules, enabling them to prioritize their health without fear of inadvertent penalties. Furthermore, we introduce a dedicated online platform for athletes, featuring a community forum for professional consultations, educational resources, and peer discussions on prohibited substances. This platform emphasizes knowledge sharing, fostering awareness of doping risks while promoting a balance between athlete well-being and performance enhancement. In summary, our integrated approach combines technological innovation with community support to identify banned substances, educate athletes on TUEs, and build a collaborative network for knowledge exchange.
