Analysis of presenteeism using a science mapping approach

Abstract This study addresses the topic of presenteeism by employing science mapping approach to systematically review the literature. It retrieved 2,317 publications from the Web of Science (WoS) spanning 2000 to 2023. The analysis and visualization of the knowledge on this topic were conducted using VOSviewer (version 1.6.19). The study offer insights into key authors, active countries, productive journals, research topics, research gaps and contradictions within the field of presenteeism. Based on the findings of the study, Annelies Boonen emerges as the most prolific author, Ronald J. Ozminkowski as the most influential author, and USA as the most active country in presenteeism research. The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is identified as the most productive and influential journal. The main topics covered are absenteeism, work productivity, quality of life, occupational health, and mental health. It also focuses on psychological issues such as depression, stress, burnout, and anxiety in relation to presenteeism in the workplace. The research gaps highlight the impact of personal factors, social interactions, and workforce diversity on presenteeism, while pointing out inconsistencies in how it is measured. This study also indicates contradictions in the relationships between presenteeism and factors such as employee engagement, organizational support and flexible work arrangements. By exploring these issues, the study enhances the understanding of presenteeism and offers new perspectives for researchers and practitioners.
