Concrete Substrate Preparation and Repair in Wastewater Application
Concrete is the most predominately used construction material for waste-water structures. Although considered an extremely durable material, concrete is susceptible to cement paste attack when exposed to acids, sulfates, and some caustics. Attacking mechanisms can be chemical, physical, or mechanical in nature and originate from external or internal sources. Concrete is also susceptible to damage from physical forces, including freeze-thaw, abrasion, erosion, and cavitation. This article1 will review the common forms of concrete attack mechanisms that occur in wastewater environments and review current industry best practices to prepare and repair concrete prior to the application of high-performance coatings.
