The Female Athlete Triad

In the world of competitive sports and physical fitness, the pursuit of perfection often pushes athletes to their limits. Among female athletes, this pursuit, combined with societal pressures, can sometimes lead to a complex health disorder known as the Female Athlete Triad. This syndrome poses significant health risks to the well-being and performance of women in sports. It was first recognized in the 1990s as a disorder of 3 interrelated components: amenorrhea, osteoporosis, and eating disorders, affecting physically active women and girls. It was later recognized that each component of the triad exists on a continuum from optimal health to disease. The three components of the triad are now called menstrual function, bone health, and energy availability. The spectrum for menstrual function ranges from eumenorrhea (regular ovulatory menstrual cycles) to functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, for bone health from optimal bone health to osteoporosis, and for energy availability from optimal to poor energy availability with or without eating disorders. This more comprehensive definition more accurately represents the diagnosis of the triad. Today, understanding the practical and clinical aspects of the impact of physical activity on the menstrual cycle of the modern active woman must include a broader view of the female athletic triad and recognize the complexity of the relationships between its individual components. By creating an environment that promotes health, well-being, and informed decision-making, female athletes can be protected from the adverse effects of the triad. Through education, supportive practices, and a commitment to health, female athletes can be helped to realize their potential in a healthy and sustainable manner.
