Assessment of the indicators of innovative development of the metallurgical industry in Russia

For a long time, the metallurgical industry has been a major part of the Russian economy and one of the key industries. However, in recent years, its activities have been affected by anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the international community. These sanctions, combined with the increasing competitiveness of metal products on the foreign market and the progress of related industries such as the chemical industry, have led to the need for continuous innovation in order to maintain the competitiveness of domestic metallurgical companies. This requires increasing the scientific and capital intensity of the industry, despite the challenges associated with the ongoing volatility of the global market. This article allows us to get an idea of the current state of innovative development in the metallurgical and finished metal products industries, as well as in manufacturing in general, for the period from 2010 to 2023. We can do this by looking at several indicators, such as the volume of spending on innovation, the number of innovative products and services produced, the percentage of companies implementing technological innovations, and the level of innovation activity in these industries. The slow growth of these indicators suggests that the scientific and technological development in the industry remains at a low level, which in turn contributes to Russia's technological lag behind developed countries. The results of the study can be used to gain insights into issues related to the optimal level of targeted funding for innovative activities in metallurgical enterprises. This includes determining the need for government intervention in these industries, assessing the success of current development strategies, and identifying potential negative consequences of maintaining the current level of innovation in the industry.
