Enhancing English presentation skills through the integrated use of TED talks and ChatGPT in university English conversation classes
This study investigates the effectiveness of an instructional model that integrates TED Talks and ChatGPT to enhance English presentation skills. The research examined the implementation of a semester-long instructional intervention utilizing TED Talks and ChatGPT version 3.5 among 58 students enrolled in the English Conversation II course at J University. the study identified four primary purposes for which participants utilized ChatGPT: selecting topics and refining ideas, learning English expressions, drafting and revising presentation scripts, and improving pronunciation and intonation. The findings revealed differentiated usage patterns according to proficiency levels. Beginners relied on learning expressions and utilizing speech feedback, while intermediate and advanced learners focused on improving logical structure and coherence. These activities positively influenced the logical composition, linguistic accuracy, and delivery skills of presentations. However, the research also identified limitations, including technical constraints of ChatGPT, excessive dependence by learners on the tool, and insufficient reflection of individual presentation styles. This study proposes practical educational recommendations emphasizing differentiated utilization strategies based on learners’ proficiency levels and highlighting the complementary role of instructors. The findings contribute significant theoretical and practical implications for the integration of AI technology and TED Talks into university-level English presentation education.
