Innovative Method for Analyzing Inter-Well Connectivity with Continuous Wavelet Transform
Abstract This study introduces an advanced method for mapping inter-well connectivity (IWC) to optimize waterflooding operations and enhance oil recovery. By leveraging sophisticated signal processing techniques, the proposed approach improves the understanding of reservoir dynamics and facilitates the design of more efficient flooding strategies. Specifically, Cross Wavelet Transform Coherence (CrWTC), utilizing the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) with a complex Morlet wavelet, is applied to analyze injection and production rate data. This technique provides a more detailed and dynamic assessment of inter-well interactions compared to conventional statistical methods, overcoming their inherent limitations. The proposed methodology has been rigorously validated through simple reservoir simulation and field datasets. The CrWTC approach demonstrated superior accuracy and reliability in IWC assessment when compared to traditional techniques such as the Capacitance Resistance Model (CRM). It enables continuous monitoring of the reservoir's dynamic behavior, effectively capturing the progression of the waterfront during waterflooding operations. The results illustrate the potential of CrWTC to enhance the precision of IWC estimation, offering significant improvements over existing methods. This advanced technique provides deeper insights into the dynamic interplay between injectors and producers, facilitating better-informed decisions for optimizing waterflooding performance. Furthermore, the methodology's flexibility allows for adaptation to other enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, broadening its applicability across diverse reservoir environments. This study contributes valuable advancements to reservoir management by offering a novel and robust tool for analyzing reservoir connectivity, ultimately driving improvements in waterflooding efficiency and oil recovery. These findings provide actionable insights for the petroleum industry, supporting the development of more effective and sustainable recovery strategies.
