Unveiling the Seafloor and Shallow Subsurface: A Novel Integrated Approach to Offshore Site Characterization
Abstract This paper presents a novel integrated site characterization paradigm that leverages state-of-the-art hull-mounted multibeam echosounders and subbottom profilers to achieve autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) quality resolution for offshore projects, including offshore energy, both traditional and renewable, and subsea cables. Innovations such as overlapping swath techniques, offset heading strategies, and enhanced calibration methods significantly enhance survey efficiency, reduce costs, and improve data quality. By optimizing the complementary use of AUVs and hull-mounted systems, this approach facilitates comprehensive geohazard detection, environmental and archaeological assessments, and supports sustainable offshore infrastructure development. The study demonstrates the transformative potential of these advancements through field results, highlighting their impact on resource allocation, environmental stewardship, and industry adoption.
