Pioneering 6 Axis Robotic Welding of Critical Offshore Structure Fabrication with High Efficiency and Schedule Acceleration
Abstract This paper explores the integration of robotic welding technology in offshore fabrication processes, addressing critical challenges posed by conventional welding methods for complex offshore connections. The study highlights how robotic welding, utilizing advanced automation, enhances productivity, reduces reliance on skilled labor, and achieves superior weld quality. The robotic welding system employed, features a high-capacity 6-axis robotic arm using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as automated program generation, real-time adjustments, and specialized positioners, the system ensures precise, efficient, and high-quality welding. This approach combines automation in planning, execution, and quality control, significantly improving overall welding performance. Comparative analysis reveals that robotic welding surpasses traditional methods in several key metrics, including productivity, defect rates, and cycle times. Productivity increased by 1.5 to 2 times, while welding time for specific joint types was reduced by 45–55%. Additionally, defect rates saw a substantial decline, leading to fewer repairs and rework. These advancements streamline operations, minimize downtime, and align with stringent industry standards. The findings underscore the transformative impact of robotic welding in offshore fabrication, particularly for high-thickness joints requiring substantial weld metal deposition. The precision, reliability, and efficiency of robotic systems ensure compliance with quality benchmarks while enhancing market competitiveness and sustainability. By showcasing the practical implementation and results of robotic welding, this paper provides valuable insights into optimizing welding processes for improved performance, reduced costs, and long-term operational excellence.
