Experiences with 4D Seismic in Campos and Santos Basins and the Road Ahead

Abstract This paper provides an overview of the application of 4D (Time-Lapse or TL) seismic technology at Petrobras for about a decade, as well as future perspectives. It also shows our current strategy and how it has been fundamental for reservoir monitoring, assisting oil recovery, reducing costs and improving safety. Some of the results shared in this publication, from both Pre- and Post-salt reservoirs, are (i) increased hydrocarbon sweep efficiency and recovery factor in siliciclastic reservoirs in the Campos Basin; (ii) guide intervention in wells and (iii) improve the predictability of geological and engineering models. This is due to the new and surprising 4D data from the hybrid seismic acquisition (Streamer x Nodes) in a Pre-salt field of Santos Basin. Furthermore, considering the way forward, Petrobras has an extensive 4D seismic acquisition and processing portfolio for its fields, including a Permanent Reservoir Monitoring (PRM) already contracted for the Mero Pre-salt field. Additionally, efforts are being made to integrate 4D data into geomechanical models and to conduct studies to monitor CO2 injection as part of Petrobras Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects under evaluation.
