Enhancing Structural Analysis Efficiency by Replacing Complex Connections with Model Matrices

Abstract This study provides a streamlined approach to structural analysis of complex connections common in structures like ffshore foundation structures, by transforming complex 3D beam element joints into 3D shell elements and ultimately model matrices-based elements, regardless of geometric complexity. This capability is powered by simplified model stiffness matrices, which accurately capture the structural behavior of intricate connections. These matrices ensure efficient load transfer and deformation consistency, allowing for a precise yet computationally efficient transformation. The method was applied to a jacket-topside model featuring joint types commonly used in offshore projects. Comparative results before and after the transformation confirm the approach's reliability, accuracy, and significant computational advantages, making it a practical solution for optimizing structural analysis workflows.

Abstract

This capability is powered by simplified model stiffness matrices, which accurately capture the structural behavior of intricate connections. The method was applied to a jacket-topside model featuring joint types commonly used in offshore projects. Comparative results before and after the transformation confirm the approach's reliability, accuracy, and significant computational advantages, making it a practical solution for optimizing structural analysis workflows.
