Unlocking the Value of Standardized Approach on Atlanta Wells Drilling and Completion
Abstract This paper discloses an innovative approach applied to ultra-deep Atlanta wells successfully constructed under time and under budget. The series of drilling and completion campaigns with new technologies in the Atlanta Field showcases enhanced operational efficiency and production capacity. Wells 7-ATL-6H-RJS and 7-ATL-7HA-RJS were drilled simultaneously resulting in time and costs optimization, the details of the operations and time with similar wells are compared to show the efficiency of the methodology applied. Lost time was avoided, with the aid of real-time analysis and monitoring tools like Broomstick, drilling automation technology to mitigate risks and eliminate invisible lost time and PWD proprietary pressure data acquisition during a FIT/LOT for better information, accuracy, and time savings. A PDC-type enlarger (hole opener double stage) was used for the first time in the world turning a 12 ¼" section into a 20" section, thus reducing operational risks. With viscous pills for cleaning efficiency, it effectively managed challenges like vibrations, minimal wear and efficient hole enlargement maintaining stability, without additional trips. To carry out the horizontal open hole gravel packing (HOHGP), due to some heterogeneities in the reservoir rock, the drilling process resulted in some unexpected wash outs. This, combined with the low fracture gradient and use of AICD, forced the pioneering use of three proppants, including an ultra-light 1.08SG proppant, lighter than the killing fluid. Another feature was the use of upper completion assembly tools. With more equipment and fewer assemblies, offshore time was reduced. The tally was prepared before the operation, with all the assemblies and tubing joints measured and identified onshore, avoiding offshore unexpected non-productive time. All lower and upper completion equipment and accessories received adhesive labels with QR Code to facilitate information as well as control of equipment to RIH. Proper fabrication and effective onboard fluid management were fundamental to avoiding issues, with strategic addition of viscous fluids to mitigate stability and cleaning problems. The pioneer use of hole opener double stage, proprietary PWD technology for LOT/FIT, batch drilling of two wells, resulted in a drilling time and cost reduction of 24%. Another notable achievement results to be considered was the installation of two Wet Christmas Tree (WCT) sequentially by the rig combined with the use of drilling string with cable system plus ROV installation system to run the WCT's, resulting in one impressive performance with two BOP trips during all drilling and completion of two wells. The HOHGP strategy allowed nearly a 100% packing in one of the most challenging offshore environments. The assembly of the upper completion tools allowed a reduction in completion time by more than 10%. This campaign underscores the importance of meticulous planning, real-time monitoring, and continuous improvement in well construction operations to minimize risks and slash costs.
