Use of Dual-Action Filter Cake Remover and Activation Fluid for Conformable Sand-Control Management Systems

Abstract Sand-producer wells have high porosities and permeabilities; however, common sand-control techniques such as cased-hole, open-hole gravel pack, or controlling the production by low drawdown pressures are only somewhat effective and not cost effective. A novel approach using a morphic shape-memory polymer media for sand control was identified to enable production from these problematic areas. This cutting-edge technology utilizes a dual-action fluid as both an activator and an enhanced filter cake remover, expanding the polymer media and ensuring flow assurance. The uniquely shape-memory polymer media is attached to the base pipe and run unexpanded into the open hole to target depth. It then expands from the combined effects of downhole temperature and the dual-activation fluid pumped into the well. The novel fluid was designed to expand the polymer media and simultaneously remove the filter cake generated by the water-based and oil/synthetic based oil drill-in fluid (DIF) at bottom hole conditions of pressure and temperature in a single displacement. The advanced shape-memory polymer media and the novel dual-activation fluid were successfully utilized in three applications globally: First application was performed in a horizontal well in the Colombian Llanos Basin, the second application was performed in highly deviated sandstone wells in Angola, and the third application was developed in a horizontal well in Gabon. A thorough analysis of reservoir data and laboratory testing was conducted before the application of the technology. Hydraulic analysis was performed to minimize risks and maximize production. The activation/filter cake breaker was compatible with all elastomers and artificial lift equipment. During the design phase, the activator/enhanced cake remover fluid was customized to expand the shape-memory polymer media at the desired bottom hole temperature (BHT). The concentration and components of the fluid were tuned to meet operational needs while successfully removing the filter cake. These two new technologies were successfully applied globally, reducing rig time, CO2 emissions, and water usage compared to traditional methods previously used in the same fields.
