BR-Loop: Bridging the Gap Between Geosciences and Reservoir Engineering

Abstract For over a decade, Petrobras has harnessed the power of ensemble-based methods, which represent the state-of-the-art in data assimilation, to facilitate the efficient history matching of multiple reservoir models. Now, Petrobras takes a significant leap forward with the launch of "BR-Loop," an integrated and automated workflow designed to transform collaboration between geosciences and engineering disciplines in reservoir modeling, characterization and data assimilation. BR-Loop connects all critical steps—from seismic depth conversion to prediction and reservoir management—while effectively addressing key uncertainties with precision. This workflow delivers an ensemble of geologically consistent and history-matched model realizations that comprehensively characterize reservoir uncertainty. It accelerates the studies involved and ensures a more efficient assimilation of data during reservoir modeling, leading to improved predictability of models and production forecasts. This enhancement supports reservoir management strategies, such as field development planning, well planning, and drainage strategies, for both early-phase and mature projects, while accurately accounting for geological uncertainties, including structure, facies, and rock/fluid properties. The transformative impact of BR-Loop is demonstrated through three detailed field case studies, including a turbidite reservoir and a pre-salt reservoir in the Campos Basin, both showing significant improvements in modeling accuracy. The third case highlights accelerated history-matching through the simultaneous assimilation of production and 4D seismic data. This collaborative framework not only optimizes decision-making in reservoir management but also streamlines workflows across interdisciplinary teams.
